La imagen querida / The beloved vision
de su vieja aldea / of the old town
y de sus montañas / and its mountains
se llevó grabada / he took pressed
muy dentro del alma, / deep in his soul,
cuando el viejo barco / when the old boat
lo alejó de España. / departed from Spain.

El abuelo un día / One day Grandfather
subió a la carreta / climbed up the cart
de subir la vida. / to start up in life.
Empuñó el arado, / he worked the land
abonó la tierra / and made it fertile
y el tiempo corría. / while time ran.
Y luchó sereno / He fought serene
por plantar el árbol / to plant the tree
que tanto quería. / he wanted so much.
Y el abuelo un día / One day Grandfather
lloró bajo el árbol / cried under the tree
que al fin florecía, / that finally flowered
lloró de alegría / he cried of joy
cuando vio sus manos, / seeing his hands,
que un poco más viejas / aged just a bit
no estaban vacías. / but empty no more.

Y el abuelo entonces, / Grandfather then,
cuando yo era niño, / when I was a child
me hablaba de España, / would talk of Spain,
del viento del norte, / of the North Wind,
de la vieja aldea / of the old town
y de sus montañas. / and its mountains.
Le gustaba tanto / He so loved to
recordar las cosas / remember those things
que llevo grabadas / he had pressed,
muy dentro del alma, / deep into his soul,
que a veces callado, / sometimes while silent,
sin decir palabra, / without uttering words,
me hablaba de España. / he'd talk to me of                                      Spain.

El abuelo un día, / One day Grandfather
cuando era muy viejo, / when very old,
allende Galicia. / as if in Galicia.
Me tomó la mano / He took my hand
y yo me di cuenta / I realized
que ya se moría. / he was dying
Y entonces me dijo, / Then, he told me,
con muy pocas fuerzas / with little strenght
y con menos prisa, / and with less of a hurry,
""prométeme, hijo, / "promise me, son,
que a la vieja aldea / that the old town,
irás algún día, / you'll visit one day, and
y al viento del norte / tell the North Wind
dirás que su amigo, / that his friend,
a una nueva tierra / to a new land
le entregó la vida. / gave his life.

Y el abuelo un día / One day Granfather
se quedó dormido / fell asleep without
sin volver a España. / returning to Spain.
El abuelo un día, / One day Granfather,
como tantos otros, / like so many others,
con tanta esperanza. / with so much hope.
Y al tiempo al abuelo / And later in time
lo vi en las aldeas, / I saw him in the towns
lo vi en las montañas, / in the mountains
en cada mañana / in every morning
y en cada leyenda, / and in every tale,
por todas las sendas / in all the roads
que anduve de España. / I treaded in Spain.
